"Orochi (Serpent)" The most popular and beloved film of Tsumasaburo Bando features the star at the height of his fame. This story of a samurai who falls on hard times due to misunderstandings and the plots if his enemies superbly depicts the absurdity of his unjust world, making it a pertinent work even in the present day. The kinetic sword fighting scenes masterfully performed by Tsumasaburo Bando were quite novel in an age when kabuki-style, leisurely and dignified moves were the norm. This style has been passed on to modern chambara films.
"Gyakuryu (Backward Flow)" This film is often acclaimed as the predecessor to "Orochi". Tsumasaburo Bando masterfully performs the role of a nihilistic samurai whose mother is killed, whose sister is used and deceived, and who loses the only love of his life. |
