"Oatsurae Jirokichi Koshi (Jirokichi the Rat)" This is the only completely preserved silent film directed by Daisuke Ito. The film relates the life of a legendary thief, Jirokichi the Rat, in an exquisite original story and through the revolutionary use of dynamic intertitles. The trio, composed of director Daisuke Ito, top-class cinematographer Karasawa and lead actor Denjiro Okochi, won great popularity for their masterful work. The skillful benshi narration featuring a mixture of Edo dialect and Kansai dialect is highly entertaining.
"Yajikita Sonno no Maki, Toba Fushimi no Maki (Yaji and Kita Yasuda’s Rescue, The Battle of Toba Fushimi)" These two short comedies show a surprising side of the acting talent of Denjiro Okochi, in sharp contrast to his heroic performance in "Jirokichi the Rat". His humorous exchanges with Goro Kawabe, his senior at Nikkatsu, are priceless. The expressions and movements of the two goofy characters make for pure, hilarious slapstick comedy. |
